The Partisans
The Partisans: Portraits of Albania’s Anti-Fascist Fighters
In my work, I see myself not just as a portrait photographer but as a historical photographer. Albania’s post-communist era, seen through the eyes of a foreigner, offered a unique, captivating experience. From the moment I arrived in Albania, I felt a deep connection to this remarkable period.
My husband’s family has roots in Albania’s partisan history, with my mother-in-law, a former partisan herself, becoming the first subject in my portrait series. These elderly men and women, Albania’s former “partisans,” once fought courageously against fascism. Many held senior roles following World War II, yet they were unable to bring about the change they envisioned under the ensuing communist regime. Their faces reflect the disappointment of a generation who risked everything in the struggle against fascism, only to find that their hopes for a better life were never realized.
As May 9th, or “Victory Day,” approaches—a day honoring triumph over fascism—these partisans still stand with pride, honoring their sacrifices in the anti-fascist fight. Yet, there remains a lingering regret, a recognition that their efforts and the sacrifice of countless Albanians ultimately led to yet another oppressive dictatorship.
